Arthur adjusted his tie as he stood in the center of his spacious Dallas estate.
The afternoon sun streamed through the tall glass windows, illuminating the polished white marble floors.
Despite his immense business success, his home felt remarkably cold and distant lately.
His younger wife, Victoria, had been acting stranger with every passing week.
She spent long hours speaking in hushed tones on her phone in the study.
Whenever Arthur entered the room, she instantly locked her screen and changed the subject.
He wanted to believe she was simply stressed from managing their complex estate.
Yet a heavy weight rested on his heart that he could not ignore.
His main focus was always his seven-month-old infant son, Leo.
Leo was his entire world, especially after years of personal personal struggles.
Arthur walked past the framed American flag hanging in the grand entrance hall.
He noticed Victoria standing near the top balcony overlooking the foyer.
She wore a rich green velvet dress, but her expression was strangely stern.
In her arms, she held little Leo tightly against her shoulder.
Arthur smiled softly, trying to brush aside his strange suspicions.
"Is everything alright up there, Victoria?" Arthur asked, his voice echoing in the hall.
Victoria did not smile back at him.
Her fingers tightened around the railing as she looked down at Arthur.
"We need to discuss the trust fund documents, Arthur," she said coldly.
"The lawyer called again about updating the sole primary beneficiary terms today."
Arthur felt a slight pulse of tension tighten in his chest.
"We already settled the estate papers last month, Victoria," he replied calmly.
"Everything goes into a secure trust for Leo until he turns twenty-one."
Victoria stepped closer to the edge of the second-floor balcony railing.
"That timeline does not work for me anymore, Arthur," she muttered under her breath.
Her voice carried a sharp, bitter edge that startled him.
Arthur took two steps toward the base of the grand staircase.
"Victoria, step back from the edge please," Arthur said, his tone turning serious.
"You are standing far too close to the drop."
Victoria lifted Leo slightly higher in her arms, looking directly into Arthur's eyes.
"You always thought you controlled everything in this family," Victoria whispered.
Arthur's stomach dropped as he saw her grip loosen on the child.
Panic surged through his veins faster than he had ever experienced before.
Without thinking, Arthur sprinted forward across the slick marble surface.
He threw his body forward, sliding across the hard floor with his arms open wide.
He caught the falling baby securely against his chest just an inch above the ground.
The heavy thud of his body echoed loudly off the high ceiling walls.
He clutched Leo tightly, his hands shaking uncontrollable against the boy's soft blanket.
Tears poured down Arthur's face as he listened to the child's tiny breaths.
"You're safe," Arthur sobbed softly into the baby's sweater.
"I have you, buddy, you're safe."
