The polished marble foyer of the Sterling estate felt cold and vast under the glow of the massive crystal chandelier, but the air upstairs on the second-floor balcony was suffocating. Victoria Sterling stood near the heavy oak railing, her red silk dress fanning out around her like a warning flag. Next to her stood Maya, wrapped in soft satin pajamas, her hands trembling as she looked down at the marble floor two stories below.
Victoria: You thought you could just walk in here with your quiet smile and take everything my family spent forty years building?
Maya: Mrs. Sterling, please calm down. I never wanted your family's money or your estate. I only came here because Richard asked me to come before he passed away.
Victoria: Don't you dare speak my late husband's name in this house! You are nothing but a common stranger trying to worm your way into his million-dollar trust fund!
Maya: I have the paperwork, Victoria. Richard left clear instructions with his estate lawyer before his heart surgery last month. He wanted me to have my rightful share of the inheritance.
Victoria: That piece of paper means nothing in this town! I am the matriarch of this family, and no outsider is going to strip me of my home or my status!
Victoria stepped closer, her sharp eyes flashing with pure malice as she reached out toward Maya's shoulders. Maya took a quick step back, her lower back pressing hard against the cold wrought-iron railing near the framed American flag hanging on the wood-paneled wall.
Maya: Please, stop this! 🇺🇸
Victoria: It ends right here today, Maya. Nobody will ever believe you belonged in this house anyway!
Without another second of hesitation, Victoria lunged forward and shoved Maya hard across the top of the marble railing. Maya let out a terrified scream as her feet left the carpeted floor, pitching forward into the empty air above the grand foyer. But right as her body plummeted toward the hard white stone below, the heavy front double doors of the mansion burst open with a resounding slam.
