The Camera In The Hedge

Diving Into The Pool For A Baby Exposed A Wealthy Stepmother's Dark Secret

Victoria: That camera is dummy hardware! You told me yourself last month that the outdoor perimeter sensors were disconnected!

Brandon: The perimeter motion sensors were disconnected, Victoria. But the 4K optical cameras on the pool wall run on a separate private circuit connected directly to my phone.

Clara: Check the feed, Mr. Vance. Check the recording from five minutes ago.

Victoria: Brandon, no! Don't listen to her games! She's just trying to stall so she can run away!

Brandon: Why would I not check my own security footage, Victoria? If Clara pushed my son, the video will prove it instantly and send her to prison.

Victoria: Because... because it's disrespectful to inspect video footage when your fiancée is standing right here telling you the truth!

Brandon: This is about my son's life! Respect has nothing to do with it!

Brandon pulled his smartphone from his trousers pocket, his thumb quickly tapping the screen to open the estate's security application.

Victoria took a fast step toward him, her hand reaching out as if to grab the phone out of his grip.

Victoria: Brandon, please! Leo is freezing! We should take him inside first before messing with security apps!

Brandon: Stay back, Victoria! Let me load the playback buffer!

Clara: Fast-forward to timestamp 10:14 AM, Mr. Vance. That was when I walked out with the blanket.

Brandon adjusted the slider on his phone screen. A small green light on the camera mounted in the hedge blinked softly as the recorded video file buffered on his display.

Victoria: Brandon... please... don't do this to me in front of the help.

Brandon: Silence, Victoria!

The video began playing in crystal-clear high definition. Brandon watched the screen intently, his eyes widening with every passing second as the raw truth unfolded before him.

On the screen, Clara was seen walking out through the double doors carrying a folded blue baby blanket. She parked the stroller neatly on the patio away from the water edge.

Then, Victoria appeared in her golden dress. She waited until Clara turned her back to fold the blanket, stepped up to the stroller, and gave it a hard, two-handed shove directly into the deep end of the pool.

Brandon: Oh my God...

Victoria: Brandon... it... it was an accident! The wheels were slippery on the wet tiles!

Brandon: You pushed it with both hands! I just watched you look right at the stroller, position your fingers on the handles, and shove my baby into the water!

Clara: I told you the truth, Mr. Vance.

Brandon: You monster! You actually tried to drown my seven-month-old child in broad daylight!

Victoria: Brandon, listen to reason! I was nervous about the wedding! I felt like you cared more about that baby than you cared about me!

Brandon: He is my son! My biological child! Of course I care about him more than anything in this world!

Victoria: But what about our future?! What about our marriage?! I was supposed to be the mistress of this estate!

Brandon: There is no marriage, Victoria! The wedding is canceled! Get off my property right now!

Victoria's face turned red with anger, her fake panic completely vanishing as she stepped toward Brandon with a cold, hateful glare.

Victoria: You can't just cancel our wedding, Brandon! My father invested two million dollars into your real estate firm last week!

Brandon: I will return every single penny to your father by five o'clock today! I don't care about his investment!

Victoria: You sign those wire transfers, and my father's lawyers will destroy your company in court!

Brandon: Let them try! I have video proof of you attempting to murder my infant son! No court in Texas will ever take your side!

Victoria turned her head sharply toward Clara, who was now standing up slowly on the poolside patio, wringing out the water from her black sleeve.

Victoria: This is all your fault, you pathetic servant! You ruined my life!

Clara: I didn't ruin your life, Mrs. Sterling. Your own cruel heart did that all by yourself.

Victoria: Shut up! You don't even belong in this country! You're nothing!

Brandon: Don't you dare talk to her like that, Victoria! Clara just saved my son's life while you tried to take it!

Victoria: She's a maid, Brandon! You're choosing a maid over a woman from one of the wealthiest families in Dallas!

Brandon: She has more honor in her little finger than you and your entire family have ever possessed!

Brandon stepped between Victoria and Clara, holding little Leo tightly against his chest while using his free hand to dial the Dallas Police Department.
