The Truth Behind The Fireplace

The Wealthy Heiress Humiliated Her Until The Billionaire Saw Her Family Crest

The library of the Sterling estate in Lake Forest smelled of aged leather, burning oak, and heavy silence.

Clara sat near the roaring hearth, wrapped in a warm dry wool cardigan Arthur's housekeeper had brought her.

Eleanor stood beside the grand bay window, clutching her smartphone while pacing across the antique Persian rug.

Eleanor: "Our corporate attorneys are already drafting an injunction to prevent any reckless disruption of the family trust."

Arthur: "Save your attorney fees, Eleanor. You won't be using company funds for your personal defense."

Victoria: "Mother and I have run the family foundation for five years! You can't just shove us aside for someone from the street!"

Arthur: "You ran the foundation into the ground by redirecting charity endowments into your personal European shopping sprees."

Clara: "Mr. Sterling, I didn't come here tonight to fight over a fortune or take anyone's family home."

Arthur: "You don't have to apologize for existing, Clara. You carry your father's honest eyes."

Richard Vance spread a series of yellowed banking ledgers across the wide walnut desk.

Richard: "I pulled the archived corporate records from October 2012, Arthur. Exactly two weeks after Julian's aircraft went missing."

Arthur: "What did you find in the escrow transactions, Richard?"

Richard: "A payment of three hundred thousand dollars was wired from the foundation account to a private investigation firm in Rockford."

Arthur: "Who authorized that disbursement without my signature?"

Richard lifted his eyes from the ledger and looked straight at Eleanor.

Richard: "The authorization signature belongs to Eleanor Sterling."

Eleanor's hands shook violently as she lowered her smartphone onto the side table.

Eleanor: "I authorized that payment to search for Julian's wreckage! We were trying to find him!"

Richard: "The invoice attached to the wire tells a completely different story, Eleanor. The memo specifies: 'Relocate Evelyn Hayes and infant child beyond Chicago metropolitan area.'"

Clara: "You forced my mother out of our neighborhood?"

Eleanor: "Your mother was a common nobody who threatened our family standing! She had no right to Julian's legacy!"

Clara: "She was his lawful wife! She loved him while you only cared about his corporate shares!"

Arthur: "You knew Evelyn was carrying my grandchild, Eleanor? All these years, you knew?"

Eleanor: "Julian was dead! Why should a gallery assistant inherit half of a commercial empire that we built with our own sweat?"

Victoria: "Mother was protecting our future, Grandfather! If Julian's child took the primary trust, what were we supposed to live on?"

Arthur: "You had three million dollars in annual dividends, Victoria! You had luxury apartments in Manhattan and Miami!"

Arthur slammed his open palm onto the armrest of his wheelchair with deafening force.

Arthur: "While you threw champagne parties, Julian's daughter was working twelve-hour shifts to keep a children's medical clinic alive!"

Clara: "I remember when the landlord locked our doors in the winter. My mother told me our family was proud, and that we never begged."

Arthur: "Evelyn had more dignity in her little finger than both of you possess combined."

Richard Vance pulled a sealed red envelope from his leather briefcase and placed it on the desk.

Richard: "Arthur, the key extracted from the falcon crest is identical to the master safety deposit cylinder."

Arthur: "Call the bank branch manager at his private residence right now. We open box four-one-two tonight."
