The Falcon On The Crest

The Wealthy Heiress Humiliated Her Until The Billionaire Saw Her Family Crest

Arthur: "Turn it over in your fingers. Let me see the hallmark beneath the lower talon."

Clara unclipt the delicate pin and turned the platinum surface toward the old man's gaze.

A microscopic Roman numeral eight was deeply carved beside a jeweler's anchor hallmark.

Arthur: "Julian's personal engraving... It really is his crest."

Victoria's mother, Eleanor Sterling, hurried through the gathering crowd, her sequined emerald dress rustling with agitated steps.

Eleanor: "Arthur, what on earth are you doing causing a public spectacle with a complete stranger?"

Arthur: "Look at this crest, Eleanor. Look at it closely and tell me what you see."

Eleanor: "It's just an old trinket someone found in an antique store or bought at a pawnshop!"

Arthur: "There were only two ever cast by Master Cellini in Florence forty years ago. I wear one on my watch chain, and Julian took the second when he deployed."

Victoria: "Julian died twelve years ago, Grandfather! His private plane vanished over northern Wisconsin without a trace."

Arthur: "I know when my oldest boy went missing, Victoria. What is your full legal name, young lady?"

Clara: "Clara Hayes. My mother was Evelyn Hayes."

Eleanor flinched as if she had been struck across the cheek, her knuckles turning white around her gold clutch.

Eleanor: "Evelyn Hayes had no child! Our private investigators ran extensive background checks twelve years ago!"

Arthur: "You told me Evelyn left town alone, Eleanor. You swore to me on your own honor that she took a cash settlement and moved abroad."

Clara: "My mother never took any settlement, sir. She worked as an art restoration clerk and died of pneumonia in an unheated apartment when I was twelve."

Arthur: "She struggled in poverty while raising Julian's child?"

Clara: "She worked two jobs just to buy my school textbooks. She taught me to earn an honest living and never beg for handouts."

Victoria: "She is lying! She probably looked up Julian's old public military obituary and had that medallion replicated!"

Arthur: "Nobody knew about the hidden mechanism inside the crest except Julian and myself."

Arthur took the platinum falcon between his thumb and index finger, pressing the central star firmly while rotating the outer border counterclockwise.

A soft metallic click echoed between them as the bottom plate swung open, revealing a miniature cylinder containing a rolled sheet of micro-vellum.

Arthur: "Only Julian knew the mechanical latch code. Richard, get over here immediately!"

Richard Vance, the longtime general counsel for Sterling Industries, hurried through the gathered onlookers with a thick legal leather case.

Richard: "I'm right beside you, Arthur. What did you find?"

Arthur: "Read this microfilm note aloud so every board member in this room can hear it."

Richard adjusted his wire-rimmed spectacles and held the illuminated magnifier over the tiny script.

Richard: "To my father Arthur: If this reaches your hands, know that Evelyn carries our daughter Clara. I have hidden the secondary trust deed inside safety box four-one-two at Northern Trust."

Victoria: "That means nothing! Julian was legally declared deceased without issue by Cook County Probate!"

Arthur: "Probate can be reopened when gross fraud has been committed, Victoria. We are going to the estate study right now."

Eleanor: "Arthur, you cannot abandon your own charity gala for an unverified charity worker!"

Arthur: "This gala is officially over. Marcus, bring the limousine to the front doors."
