The Sterling estate in Lake Forest rose against the dark night like a fortress of limestone and iron.
Clara sat on an antique leather armchair inside the massive private library, wrapped in a warm wool blanket.
A tall man with silvering hair and wire-rimmed glasses opened a thick leather briefcase across the mahogany desk.
Richard: "Good evening, Arthur. Your driver said this was an urgent matter of probate."
Arthur: "It is more than probate, Richard. It is a correction of twelve years of deceit."
Eleanor stood near the crackling fireplace, pacing nervously across the Persian rug.
Eleanor: "Richard, my father-in-law is acting under emotional distress after an altercation at the gala."
Arthur: "My mind is as sharp as the day I founded this company, Eleanor. Read Julian's original will."
Richard Vance adjusted his spectacles, pulling a yellowed document tied with ribbon from his briefcase.
Richard: "Julian's testament executed on May 14th, 2012, states that his entire share reverts to his issue."
Victoria: "Issue means documented biological children registered at birth, Richard!"
Richard: "The clause specifically cites any child born of his marriage to Evelyn Hayes, registered or unregistered."
Clara: "I brought my birth certificate in my work tote bag. I keep it with my clinic license."
Clara reached into her canvas bag, setting a folded, certified county document onto the desk surface.
Richard leaned forward, unfolding the paper under the glow of the brass reading lamp.
Richard: "Mother's name: Evelyn Marie Hayes. Father's name: Julian Sterling. Registered in Cook County."
Eleanor grabbed the edge of the mahogany desk, her voice rising an octave higher.
Eleanor: "That document could be a complete forgery printed in a basement!"
Richard: "The state seal is embossed, Eleanor. I recognize the Cook County clerk’s signature from 2013."
Arthur: "Did you know about this, Eleanor? Answer me honestly before I call the district attorney."
Eleanor: "Of course I didn't know! Julian never told us he went through with that ceremony!"
Arthur: "Then why did you wire two hundred thousand dollars to an investigation firm in Gary, Indiana?"
Silence filled the cavernous room, broken only by the crackle of burning birch in the hearth.
Eleanor pulled her hands back from the desk, her lips trembling slightly in the firelight.
Eleanor: "That was for security research regarding our commercial properties."
Arthur: "I reviewed the bank statements yesterday afternoon. The memo line read 'Hayes settlement tracking.'"
Victoria: "Mother... what did you do twelve years ago?"
Eleanor: "I protected our family name, Victoria! That woman had no background, no family money, nothing!"
Clara: "My mother died of pneumonia while working night shifts because she refused to beg from anyone."
Clara stood up from the armchair, the blanket slipping from her shoulders onto the wood floor.
Clara: "You let her struggle alone while you lived in this palace."
Eleanor: "She made her own choices when she refused our initial private buyout."
Arthur: "You offered her money to stay away from my son?"
Eleanor: "I offered her money to leave town before she ruined his business prospects!"
Arthur slammed his palm against the armrest of his wheelchair, rattling the crystal decanters nearby.
Arthur: "Richard, begin the immediate transfer of the primary family trust."
