Fifteen minutes later, bright headlights flashed through the tall glass windows of the front entrance. The sound of a car engine shut off, followed by quick, heavy footsteps coming up the front porch steps. Mark walked over and opened the heavy double doors, revealing Arthur Harrison, a tall, white-haired attorney carrying a leather briefcase.
Arthur: Mark! Where is she?
Mark: She's right here, Arthur. Come inside.
Arthur stepped into the warm foyer, setting his briefcase down on a side table. When his eyes landed on Ella standing next to Lily, his eyes filled with tears. He knelt down on the floor, looking at the young girl with deep affection.
Arthur: Hello, little one. You look just like your father when he was young.
Ella: Did you know my dad?
Arthur: I knew him for forty years, Ella. He loved you very much, and he spent the last months of his life making sure you would have a safe home and a bright future.
Mark: Arthur, what are the legal steps we need to take tonight?
Arthur: First, I have already notified the family court judge on my way over. He is signing an emergency custody order placing Ella in your direct care, Mark. Victoria will have no legal access to this child or the estate.
Mark: What about Victoria's actions over the last three weeks?
Arthur: I spoke with the district attorney. Police officers are on their way here right now to take a formal statement from you and examine the closet space. Victoria will be arrested for child endangerment and unlawful restraint.
At that moment, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed from the top of the stairs. Victoria walked down the grand staircase carrying two large suitcases, her face pale and drawn.
Victoria: Arthur... please. You have known my family for decades. You can't let them do this to me.
Arthur: Victoria, what you did was not only illegal, it was inhumane. Richard Sterling's estate will be executed exactly as his final will instructed. Fifty percent of all assets, including this mansion and the business, belong to Ella.
Victoria: I built this home! I decorated every single room in this house!
Mark: You lost this home the moment you turned it into a prison, Victoria.
The sound of police sirens hummed softly in the distance, growing louder as two patrol cars turned down the long estate driveway. Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the tall front windows of the foyer.
Victoria: No... no, please, Mark! Don't let them arrest me here! Think about Lily!
Mark: I am thinking about Lily, Victoria. I am teaching her that actions have consequences, no matter how much money you have.
Several American police officers in uniform rushed through the front double doors into the foyer while Victoria stood frozen near the staircase.
Officer Davis: Mr. Sterling? We received an emergency call from Attorney Harrison regarding a child endangerment case.
Mark: Yes, Officer. My wife, Victoria Sterling, held my ten-year-old sister in that closet under the stairs for three weeks to hide her from an estate inheritance.
Officer Davis: Mrs. Sterling, step away from the luggage and place your hands behind your back.
Victoria: This is a massive mistake! You don't know who I am!
Officer Davis: You have the right to remain silent, ma'am. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
The officers placed Victoria in handcuffs and led her out the front door into the cool night air. Her loud protests faded away as the police car doors slammed shut behind her.
Mark walked over to Ella and Lily, putting his arms around both girls and drawing them close against his side in a tight embrace.
Mark: It's over now, girls. Everything is going to be alright.
Arthur: Mark, tomorrow morning we will go to the probate court and finalize the adoption paperwork. Ella is officially a Sterling, and no one can ever take that away from her.
Ella: Does this mean I get to stay here with you and Lily forever?
Mark: Yes, Ella. You're home now, and you'll never have to hide in the dark again.
Lily smiled warmly, taking her sister's hand as they walked together toward the kitchen to finish their dinner, leaving the dark closet under the stairs open and empty forever.
