Mark: What on earth is going on in this house, Victoria?
Victoria: Mark, please! Step away from that door right now! You don't know what you're doing!
Mark: I know my daughter is sneaking food off her plate and pushing it under a locked door!
Lily: Daddy, don't be mad at her! She was hungry!
Mark: Who was hungry, Lily? Who is inside this closet?!
Mark pointed a forceful finger down toward the open doorway, his voice shaking the quiet hallway. Victoria reached out, grabbing his arm with both hands, her face completely pale.
Victoria: Mark, I am begging you as your wife, leave it alone! Let us talk in the private study first!
Mark: We are not talking in the study! I pay the mortgage on this estate, and I have a right to know what is in my own home!
Victoria: It is about your father's estate! It is about the trust fund he left behind!
Mark: My father passed away six months ago! What does his estate have to do with a locked cupboard under the stairs?
Lily: She's been in there a long time, Daddy. She cries when the hall lights go off at night.
Mark looked down at Lily, his furious scowl softening for a fraction of a second into pure confusion. He turned his head slowly to look at Victoria, who was wringing her hands in sheer dread.
Mark: Victoria... what did you do?
Victoria: I didn't do anything wrong! I was trying to protect our family business! I was trying to protect our lifestyle!
Mark: By locking someone in a storage space?! Are you out of your mind?
Victoria: If anyone finds out about this, the probate court will freeze every single bank account we own!
Mark: I don't care about the bank accounts right now!
Mark pulled his arm free from Victoria's tight grip and leaned into the dark room. The narrow closet smelled of dust, old cardboard boxes, and stale air. He clicked his lit flashlight on, sweeping the bright white beam into the far back corner. Sitting on a pile of folded laundry was a young girl, wrapped tightly in a blue blanket. She held a small wooden picture frame against her chest, her eyes wide with absolute terror as the light hit her face.
Girl: Hello, daddy?
Mark froze instantly, the flashlight trembling in his grip. The air left his chest in a sudden, sharp gasp as he stared at the young girl's face. She had his own dark brown eyes, his nose, and the exact same small birthmark on her neck.
Mark: Oh god... oh god, no...
Victoria: Mark, don't look at her! Don't listen to a single word she says!
Mark: Who is this child, Victoria?! Answer me right now!
Victoria: She's nobody! She's a lie your father created before he died!
Mark: She has my face! She has my eyes! How long has she been trapped in here?!
Mark reached forward quickly, pulling the frightened young girl out of the dark closet into his arms. He lifted her up, cradling her frail body tightly against his chest while shedding tears of remorse and overwhelming grief. Victoria watched on in horror as Mark rocked the child back and forth.
Mark: Oh god, I'm so, so sorry... πΊπΈ
