Mark stood near the entrance of the giant Dallas mansion and wiped his sweat.
The air inside the grand hallway felt heavy and full of bitter tension.
His stepmother Victoria wore a rich green velvet gown that dragged on the floor.
She stood near the top balcony overlooking the bright white marble tile floor below.
Mark had come home early to discuss the family trust fund and business estate.
He knew Victoria had been hiding legal records from the family court lawyer for months.
Her face looked pale as she stared down at Mark with dark eyes full of anger.
She held little baby Lily high in her arms near the polished wood railing.
Mark felt his heart pounding against his chest like a loud heavy hammer.
"Victoria, please step away from that railing right now," Mark warned softly.
"You think you can take my late husband's estate away from me?" Victoria shouted back.
"This is not about money or the house," Mark said, taking one careful step forward.
"It is about doing what is right for this innocent child," Mark pleaded firmly.
Victoria laughed in a cold tone that made the huge foyer feel completely frozen.
She had lived in luxury for years while hiding the true last will and testament.
Mark had spent weeks collecting bank records to prove her long record of fraud.
Now she held his infant daughter near the edge to scare him into staying silent.
"If you call the police, you lose everything," Victoria hissed down at him angrily.
Mark stopped moving and held both hands up in the plain air to show peace.
He could see the framed American flag hanging on the high wall right behind her.
The room went totally quiet as the heavy silence stretched between them for seconds.
Mark squeezed his eyes for a short second to calm his shaking hands down.
He prayed that she would turn around and walk back toward the safe master bedroom.
Instead, Victoria lifted the child even higher while stepping closer to the white railing.
Her tall designer shoes slipped slightly on the smooth hardwood floor of the upper balcony.
A sudden gasping sound came out of her throat as she completely lost her balance.
Mark saw the tiny baby slip out of her grasp and fall through the open air.
Time seemed to stop completely inside the massive bright white room below.
Mark did not hesitate for a single second as panic shot through his entire body.
He sprinted across the polished marble floor with every ounce of speed he had inside.
