The Broken Trust

A Father Discovers The Truth About His Son's Nanny

David followed Eleanor out into the wide central hallway again.

Sarah was still holding Leo near the large front entry.

The young nanny looked nervous as the couple approached her.

Eleanor: Get out of my way, Sarah!

Sarah: Mrs. Sterling, please calm down for the baby's sake.

Eleanor: Do not tell me what to do in this house!

David: Eleanor, stop shouting in front of our son immediately!

Leo started to cry softly again from the loud noise.

Sarah gently patted the baby's back to comfort him.

Sarah: It is okay, sweet boy, you are safe here.

Eleanor stepped close to Sarah with an angry look.

Eleanor: Hand me my son right now, Sarah!

Sarah: I cannot do that while you are this upset.

David: Step back, Eleanor, she is right about that.

Eleanor pointed her finger directly at the quiet nanny.

Eleanor: You are fired as of this exact second, Sarah!

David: No, she is not fired by anyone today, Eleanor.

Eleanor: I run this household and I make the decisions!

David: I pay her salary and she stays right here.

Sarah looked between the two with clear teary eyes.

Sarah: I only want what is best for little Leo.

Eleanor: You wanted my husband's attention from day one here!

David: That is completely insane and completely untrue, Eleanor!

Eleanor: Look at how she runs to you every time!

David: She came to me because you were taking legal files!

Sarah: Mr. Sterling, I found these papers near the door.

Sarah reached into her apron pocket with her right hand.

She pulled out a folded envelope stamped with blue ink.

Eleanor tried to reach out and grab the paper fast.

David stepped quickly between them and took the envelope instead.

David: What is this document, Sarah?

Sarah: Mrs. Sterling dropped it while running down the stairs.

David unfolded the heavy paper and read the top heading.

His eyes widened as he scanned the official legal terms.

It was an application to transfer the estate title away.

David: You tried to sell the family vacation home property?

Eleanor looked away toward the wall in complete silence now.

David: This house belonged to my late mother, Eleanor!

Eleanor: We needed the capital to cover my debts quickly.

David: What debts are you talking about right now?

Eleanor: I invested in a business deal that went wrong.

David: You forged my signature on these mortgage forms!

Sarah: I saw her signing them at the kitchen table.

Eleanor: Shut your mouth, you foolish girl!

David: Do not speak to her like that ever again!

David felt a deep sadness mixed with his intense anger.

He realized his entire marriage was built on recent lies.

David: How much money do you actually owe, Eleanor?

Eleanor swallowed hard and looked down at the floor.

Eleanor: Over half a million dollars to private lenders.

David gasped aloud at the shocking and huge number.

David: Half a million dollars without telling your own husband?
