Within thirty minutes, three police cruisers sped up the long driveway with lights flashing brightly.
Officers rushed into the high-ceilinged foyer with their hands resting on their sidearms.
They looked at the open metal hatch in disbelief as paramedics moved in to care for Sarah.
Police Officer: Ma'am, are you able to tell us what happened here?
Sarah took a deep breath and held Mark's hand tightly as she spoke clearly.
Sarah: My stepmother tricked me into coming down to the storage cellar four months ago.
Sarah: She locked the heavy iron hatch from the top and took my phone away.
Police Officer: Did she bring you food or water during that entire time?
Sarah: Only enough to keep me alive while she pressured me to sign legal papers.
The lead officer turned slowly toward Victoria, who was crying loudly near the stairs.
Police Officer: Victoria Vance, you are under arrest for kidnapping, extortion, and unlawful imprisonment.
The officer pulled Victoria's hands behind her back and snapped steel handcuffs around her wrists.
Victoria: Call my attorney! I demand to speak to my divorce lawyer and estate manager!
Police Officer: You can call whoever you want from the county jail, ma'am.
The officers escorted Victoria out the heavy front doors into the bright midday sun.
Mark watched them walk away, feeling a massive weight lift off his heavy shoulders.
He turned back to Sarah, who was sitting comfortably on the sofa with a warm blanket.
A team of paramedics checked her heart rate and wrapped her in a thermal jacket.
Paramedic: Her vitals are remarkably stable, but she needs to go to the hospital immediately.
Mark: I am coming with you. We will never be separated again.
Lily climbed onto the sofa and wrapped her arms around her mother's neck once more.
Lily: Mommy, will you come home today?
Sarah: I am already home, sweetie. I am never leaving you again.
Mark picked up his phone and dialed his family lawyer to take immediate legal action.
Mark: Cancel every legal claim Victoria made against our trust fund and property.
Lawyer: Consider it done, Mark. We will file a full lawsuit and protect your entire estate.
