The heavy iron door swung upward with a harsh metallic screech that echoed off the high walls.
A blast of cold, damp air rushed out from the dark square hole in the floor.
Mark stared down into the pitch-black opening with a look of total shock and disbelief.
Mark: What is this?!
He pulled a small flashlight from his jacket pocket and switched on the bright beam.
The ray of yellow light cut through the thick dust inside the deep stone shaft.
Narrow concrete steps led down into a small, windowless underground room beneath the mansion floor.
A faint voice echoed up from the darkness, weak and trembling with deep fear.
Sarah: Hello? Is somebody up there?
Mark nearly dropped the flashlight into the open pit as his hands began to shake violently.
That soft, desperate voice belonged to the woman he loved more than life itself.
Mark: Sarah?! Is that really you down there?!
Sarah: You found me... please help me!
Mark shone the light straight down into the narrow, damp dirt room below.
A distressed blonde woman lay curled up on a thin blanket on the cold floor.
Her clothes were torn and dusty, and her face was pale from months without sunlight.
Tears rolled down her smudge-covered cheeks as she looked up into the bright light.
Lily: Mommy! It's Mommy!
Lily began to cry happily as she leaned over the edge of the dark opening.
Mark felt a sudden wave of intense rage and overwhelming relief crash over his heart.
His wife had not abandoned her family or left the country as everyone believed.
She had been trapped directly beneath their feet inside their own home all this time.
Mark: Do not move, Sarah! I am coming down right now!
Mark turned toward the wide front doors where his security staff usually stood guard.
Two dressed security guards in suits were already running toward the staircase after hearing the commotion.
Mark: Lock down every gate! No one leaves this mansion!
Guard: Yes, sir! Shutting down the main security gates right now!
The lead guard immediately reached for his radio to alert the external security post.
Heavy metal gates at the edge of the grand estate began to slide shut automatically.
Mark turned back to the hatch, determined to bring his wife back into the light.
Mark: Hold on, I'm bringing you home.
He stepped carefully onto the narrow concrete stairs and reached his arms down toward her.
Sarah reached up with trembling hands and grasped her husband's arms with all her remaining strength.
Mark lifted her gently out of the dark hole and into the brightly lit room.
He wrapped his arms tightly around her small, weak frame as she wept against his chest.
Sarah: Thank you... I thought I'd never see you again.
