The Suitcase Hidden Inside Our Mansion

Bright morning light flooded the expansive white marble hallway of the luxury mansion, bouncing off the polished floors and highlighting the majestic American flag hanging proudly against the wall. Chloe’s heart raced against her ribs as she stood frozen in her pristine beige dress, her breathing shallow and frantic. She had just finished locking the heavy zipper of a large grey luggage bag, sealing away a terrifying secret inside its dark interior. A faint, muffled sob echoed from within the fabric prison, but Chloe’s face remained ice-cold, completely devoid of maternal warmth or remorse. Her steps clicked sharply against the marble as she turned her back on the suitcase and walked off toward the kitchen, leaving the helpless victim behind in the quiet foyer. The immense wealth and high-society status of the estate had twisted her mind, making her view a defenseless little girl as an inconvenient obstacle to her luxurious lifestyle. She never imagined that her husband would return from his business trip early today, let alone walk through those front doors minutes after her cruel deed was done. Every tick of the grand grandfather clock seemed to count down the seconds until an explosive confrontation shattered their picture-perfect marriage. The trap was set, but the person walking into the foyer was about to turn the tables in a way she never anticipated.

Chloe: Keep quiet in there, or you won't get any air at all until nighttime!

Lily: It's too dark, Mommy! Please let me out of here!

Chloe: Stop calling me that! You are nothing but a burden on my life, and soon your father won't have to worry about you either.

Lily: Daddy will find me! He always finds me!

Chloe: Your father is miles away at a board meeting. By the time he comes back, this luggage will be miles away from this house.

Chloe paused near the edge of the hallway, listening closely to ensure no other servants were watching before she slipped away toward the back wing. The silence in the grand foyer settled back in, heavy and suffocating, broken only by the softest whimpers coming from the grey bag near the American flag. The heavy mahogany double doors suddenly clicked, the brass locks turning with a sharp mechanical snap as someone pushed them open from the outside. Arthur stepped inside, wearing a sharp dark blue suit and carrying a heavy leather briefcase in his right hand. He stopped dead in his tracks near the entrance, his eyebrows furrowing as a strange, heartbreaking sound caught his attention.

Lily: Daddy! Please open it! It's so dark and I can't breathe!

Arthur: What in the world...? Who is calling my name out here in the hallway?

Arthur dropped his expensive leather briefcase onto the white marble floor with a dull, echoing thud, his heart dropping into his stomach. He spun around, his eyes scanning the bright foyer until they landed on the large grey luggage bag resting right beneath the American flag. The muffled sobs were unmistakable now, accompanied by desperate, frantic scratches against the fabric lining from the inside. Panic seized his chest as he realized his worst nightmare was unfolding right inside his own home while he was away managing their family business.

Lily: Daddy! Help me! Please get me out!

Arthur: Hold on, sweetheart! I'm opening it right now! Just stay calm!
