The Red Eye Above The Wall

The Stepmother Sealed My Son Behind The Hallway Brick Wall

Isabella: That camera was disconnected! The interior designer told me the hallway wires were shut down for painting!

Marcus: The commercial lines were shut down, Isabella. The private executive satellite feeds record twenty-four hours a day.

Isabella: You... You installed a covert security lens inside our private hallway?!

Marcus: I installed a guard to protect my son from a predator who wanted his inheritance.

Isabella: It violates my right to privacy! You cannot present that footage in a Texas court of law!

Marcus: Under Texas Penal Code Section 16.02, a property owner may record any area of his residence to protect life.

Isabella: I am a legal resident of this mansion! I have legal expectations of privacy!

Marcus: You have zero expectations of privacy when committing felony unlawful restraint against a minor.

Marcus pulled his smartphone from his pocket, tapping the screen and turning the bright display toward her face.

The high-definition footage played immediately, the crystal-clear audio echoing off the high stone walls.

On the screen, Isabella stood in her emerald green gown, holding seven-year-old Ethan by his wrists.

Her cold voice boomed through the phone's speaker: "Cry all you want, you little brat! Your father will never find you behind this brick!"

Then the footage captured her shoving the boy into the dark recess and securing the metal vent with a cordless screwdriver.

Next came her dragging the massive oil painting across the brickwork to hide the iron grate completely.

Isabella clapped both hands over her mouth, her eyes bulging in pure, paralyzing dread.

Isabella: Turn that off! Delete that file right now, Marcus!

Marcus: The Dallas County District Attorney reviewed this live feed twenty minutes ago, Isabella.

Isabella: Marcus, please! Think of our social circle! Think of what our friends at the country club will say!

Marcus: Our friends at the country club will be reading your federal mugshot on the front page tomorrow morning.

Isabella: I will sign a complete waiver! I will surrender every claim to the logistics company and leave Texas tonight!

Marcus: You won't take a single step past those front gates, Isabella.

Isabella: My father's defense attorneys will have this warrant thrown out before dinner!

Marcus: Your father's attorneys were disqualified by the federal magistrate two hours ago, Isabella.

Isabella: Disqualified?! On what possible legal grounds?!

Marcus: On grounds of facilitating twelve million dollars in fraudulent offshore transfers through Panama.

Isabella backed away toward the front doors, her expensive green satin gown rustling against the wainscoting.

Isabella: That twelve million was an authorized bridge loan for our maritime fuel reserves!

Marcus: That money was transferred to an account in the Cayman Islands registered under your maiden name.

Isabella: My father told me to open that account! He said it was an emergency family trust fund!

Marcus: Your father gave federal prosecutors every single email between you two this morning.

Isabella gasped, her hands shaking so hard that she nearly collapsed onto the marble step.

Isabella: My father... gave them my personal emails?!

Marcus: He made a plea deal at ten o'clock this morning, Isabella. He traded you to save himself from life imprisonment.

Isabella: That coward! That selfish, disgusting old coward! He promised me he would protect me no matter what!

Maria: There is no honor among thieves, Isabella. You should have learned that a long time ago.

The heavy iron gates at the end of the long driveway groaned as they swung open.

The high-pitched wail of police sirens began to echo up the tree-lined avenue, growing louder by the second.

Flashing red and blue emergency lights swept across the white columns of the mansion, painting the foyer walls in crimson strokes.

Isabella turned toward the terrace French doors in pure, naked terror, but heavy tactical boots were already pounding across the porch.

Four uniformed police officers and two armed federal marshals marched into the grand hall.

Leading the squad was Detective Marcus Miller from the Dallas Police Major Crimes Division, his gold shield gleaming under the chandelier.

Detective Miller: Marcus Sterling? We received the emergency priority dispatch from corporate security.

Marcus: Over here, Detective Miller. The suspect is standing right by the staircase.

Isabella: Marcus Miller! Thank goodness it's you! Tell these patrolmen to stand down! This is a domestic dispute!

Detective Miller stopped three feet from Isabella, looking down at her rumpled green dress with cold disgust.

Detective Miller: Keep your hands visible, Mrs. Vance. Do not attempt to move.

Isabella: Do not call me a suspect! Marcus assaulted me! He shoved me to the floor in front of his maid!

Detective Miller: Under Texas Penal Code Section 9.32, reasonable physical force is fully justified to defend a child from violent felony assault.

Isabella: Nobody was assaulted! The boy crawled into the wall vent on his own!

Detective Miller: We have the 4K security footage from your ceiling dome, Isabella. We watched you screw that grate shut.

Isabella's jaw fell slack, her eyes darting between the armed officers as terror locked her throat.

Detective Miller: Isabella Vance, you are under arrest for attempted capital murder of a minor, aggravated kidnapping, and corporate wire fraud.

Isabella shrieked, stumbling backward toward the library doors as the officers moved in.
