The Father Who Caught Falling Stairs

The crystal chandeliers of the Vance estate glittered over the cold marble foyer like frozen stars, indifferent to the silent tension building beneath them. High on the second-story balcony, a woman in a turquoise silk blouse stood rigid against the ornate railing, her posture radiating bitter entitlement and long-held family prejudice. Below her, standing frozen on the grand white staircase, a little girl in a red dress clutched her small hands together in absolute terror. An American flag hung proudly in the background, contrasting sharply with the total lack of justice or mercy inside the mansion walls. Eleanor glared down with an expression of pure, unadulterated venom, her silver hair catching the sharp light as she prepared to commit an unforgivable act.

Eleanor: You don't belong here!

Lily: Please, I didn't mean to come up the stairs, I was just looking for the exit!

Eleanor: Get out of my sight before I throw you out myself! You are nothing but trash on my floors!

The little girl backed away in sheer panic, her small sneakers slipping slightly against the polished wood of the landing as Eleanor lunged forward with terrifying speed. A sudden, piercing shriek cut through the cavernous foyer as the older woman shoved the child directly over the balcony railing.

Lily: Help me! Mommy!

Eleanor: Good riddance to filthy blood!

A shocked gasp and a high-pitched scream bounced off the marble pillars as gravity took hold, pulling the small red figure backward into open air. Time seemed to fracture as the child fell toward the bright white marble floor below in a sickening, echoing descent. Down in the foyer, a dark-suited man spun around instantly, his eyes widening in pure horror as he registered the falling child. With a dramatic musical swell and a swift swoosh, he sprinted across the polished stone and threw his arms out just in time. He caught the falling girl mid-air inches above the destructive impact of the marble mosaic, his breath catching painfully in his throat as the world stopped spinning.
