The Crest of Sterling Manor

The Armed Guards Came for Her Children Until They Saw the Medallion

The front porch went completely silent except for the faint hum of the idling SUVs out on the street.

Clara pulled Maya behind her legs, shielding her small frame from the three men standing on the steps.

Clara: "It belongs to her. It was in her blanket when she arrived at the county shelter."

Agent Vance: "That medallion carries the three-falcon crest of the Sterling family estate."

Clara: "I do not care whose crest it is. I am their legal adoptive mother."

Agent Vance: "Ma'am, Arthur Sterling passed away forty-eight hours ago in Chicago."

Clara felt a cold knot tighten in her chest as the name hit the open air.

Clara: "The real estate billionaire Arthur Sterling? What does that have to do with my kids?"

Agent Vance: "His will left ninety percent of his family trust to the surviving heirs of his late son, Julian."

Clara: "Julian died in a car crash seven years ago. Everyone in Illinois knows that story."

Agent Vance: "Julian had twin children whose disappearance was covered up by Arthur's second wife, Evelyn Sterling."

Leo crept out from behind the doorframe, clutching a toy wooden truck against his chest.

Around the man's neck hung the exact duplicate of the silver medallion resting on Maya's chest.

Clara: "Julian Sterling had this made for them?"

Agent Vance: "There were only two ever cast in platinum. One was buried with Julian. The other vanished with the children."

Clara: "If you think you can take them away to some greedy mansion, you are out of your mind."

Agent Vance: "We were not sent by Arthur Sterling. We were retained by Evelyn Sterling's corporate defense lawyer."

Clara took a step backward into the hall, her heart racing against her ribs.

Clara: "Why would Evelyn Sterling hire armed private security to take two orphans?"

Agent Vance: "Because if these children appear in probate court tomorrow morning, she loses the four-hundred-million-dollar inheritance."

The realization hit Clara like a sudden physical blow across the face.

Clara: "You were sent here to make sure they never reach that courthouse."

Agent Vance: "My orders were to deliver them to a private transport facility in Gary, Indiana."

Clara: "And what were you planning to do to them?"

Vance stood back up, adjusting his dark tie while casting a long look at the street behind him.

Agent Vance: "I was told
