The Shadow Under The Stairs

Secret Daughter Locked In The Dallas Mansion Closet

Mark: What on earth is going on in this house, Victoria?

Victoria: Mark, please, step away from that door right now! You don't understand what you're doing!

Mark: I understand that my seven-year-old daughter is sneaking food off her dinner plate and pushing it into a locked closet!

Lily: Daddy, don't be mad at her! She was hungry!

Mark: Who was hungry, Lily? Who is inside this room?!

Mark reached for the doorknob again, his knuckles turning white against the polished brass. Victoria rushed forward, grabbing his arm with both hands, her voice cracking with deep desperation.

Victoria: Mark, I am begging you as your wife, leave it alone! Let's talk about this in the study first!

Mark: We aren't talking about anything in the study! I pay the mortgage on this Dallas estate, I pay for the security systems, and I have a right to know what is hidden in my own hallway!

Victoria: It's about the family estate... it's about the trust fund your father left behind!

Mark: My father passed away six months ago! What does his estate have to do with a locked door under the stairs?

Lily: She's been in there a long time, Daddy. She cries when the lights go off.

Mark looked down at his daughter, his furious scowl softening for a fraction of a second before morphing into pure confusion. He looked back up at Victoria, whose face was completely drained of color.

Mark: Victoria... what did you do?

Victoria: I didn't do anything! I was trying to protect our family's reputation! I was trying to protect our home!

Mark: By locking someone inside a utility closet?! Are you completely insane?

Victoria: You don't know the whole story, Mark! If anyone finds out about this, the lawyers will freeze every single bank account we own!

Mark: I don't give a damn about the bank accounts right now!

Mark pulled his arm free from Victoria's grip and shoved the white door wide open. The dark space inside smelled of dust, old cardboard boxes, and stale air. He clicked his flashlight on, sweeping the bright white beam into the far back corner of the narrow closet. Sitting on a pile of folded laundry was a young girl, no older than ten, wrapped tightly in a faded blue blanket. She held a small wooden picture frame against her chest, her eyes wide with total terror as the bright light hit her face.

Girl: Hello, daddy?

Mark froze instantly, the flashlight trembling in his hand. The air left his lungs in a sudden, sharp gasp as he stared at the child's features. She had his own dark brown eyes, the same sharp jawline, and the exact same small birthmark just below her left collarbone.

Mark: Oh god... oh god, no...

Victoria: Mark, don't look at her! Don't listen to anything she says!

Mark: Who is this child, Victoria?! Answer me right now!

Victoria: She's nobody! She's a lie your father created to ruin us!

Mark: She has my face! She has my eyes! How long has she been in here?!

Mark dropped the flashlight onto the wooden floor and reached into the dark closet, his hands shaking as he pulled the frightened little girl out into the warm light of the hallway. He pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her frail body as tears spilled down his cheeks.

Mark: Oh god, I'm so, so sorry... πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
