The Arrest In The Hallway

Her Stepmother Hurt The Baby While Her Husband Was Away

Sarah: They're here, Mr. Marcus. The police are coming up the drive.

Marcus: Open the front doors, Sarah. Let them in.

Victoria: No! Don't open those doors! Marcus, please! Look at me!

Victoria fell to her knees on the checkerboard floor, grabbing the hem of Marcus's navy trousers as heavy tears finally began streaming down her face.

Victoria: I'm sorry! I'm so sorry, Marcus! I was stressed! I was jealous of your ex-wife! I'll get help, I swear I will!

Marcus: Get your hands off me, Victoria. Your tears mean nothing to me now.

Victoria: Please! If I go to prison, my family's social standing will be ruined! Think about what people will say at the country club!

Marcus: You cared more about country club gossip than the safety of a defenseless baby.

The heavy oak front doors swung wide open, letting in the bright daylight along with three armed sheriff's deputies.

Deputy Miller: Sheriff's Department! Who called nine-one-one?

Marcus: I did, Deputy. Over here.

Deputy Miller: Sir, what is the situation in this house?

Marcus: My wife, Victoria Vance, has been abusing my infant son and physically assaulting our nanny. Here is the phone with time-stamped photo evidence and her personal journal entries.

Deputy Miller took the phone and scrolled through the images. His face turned stern and cold as he looked down at Victoria kneeling on the floor.

Deputy Miller: Ma'am, stand up right now and place your hands behind your back.

Victoria: Deputy, you don't understand! My husband is framing me so he can take my share of the marital assets!

Deputy Miller: Ma'am, I am looking at photos of a baby with severe finger-shaped bruises. Stand up immediately.

Victoria: I won't stand up! You can't touch me! Do you know who my father is?

Deputy Miller: I don't care if your father is the governor. You are under arrest for felony child abuse, domestic battery, and unlawful restraint.

The two junior deputies stepped forward, grabbing Victoria's arms and lifting her off the marble floor. They pulled her hands behind her back, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists with a sharp metallic click.

Victoria: Get your filthy hands off my satin dress! Marcus, tell them to stop! Tell them it was a mistake!

Marcus: The only mistake I made was bringing you into my son's life.

Victoria: You'll regret this, Marcus! I'll spend every dime I have fighting this in court!

Deputy Miller: Escort her out to the patrol car, boys.

Victoria kicked and screamed as the officers dragged her across the checkerboard floor, out through the grand wooden doors, and into the bright sunlight outside. The heavy police car door slammed shut, cutting off her frantic screaming for good.
